Family Trips in the Summer

Did you know that the temperature in the Berchtesgaden salt mine is a pleasant 12 degrees Celcius all year round? Especially on hot summer days, a guided tour of the salt mine is the perfect way for young and old to cool off. Our guests spend about 60 minutes underground and experience the ride on the mine train, the two underground wooden slides and the crossing over the fascinating Mirror Lake.

Family day trips - Excursion in Fine Weather Near Munich

Perhaps you are wondering why you should visit the salt mine when the weather is nice? A visit to the salt mine does not depend on the weather and is one of the most popular excursion destinations in Bavaria during the summer. The weather underground is always the same - rain, heat, storms or hail have no influence on the tour of the salt mine.

When is the best time to visit the salt mine? The visitor mine is busiest on rainy days. On these days in particular, we recommend that you buy tickets online in advance to reserve a fixed place. On fair weather days, it is often a little quieter in the salt mine. Precisely for this reason and because of the cool temperatures underground, the salt mine is a perfect destination for a day out in fine weather.

Berchtesgaden’s Best Ice Cream

You'll find Eva's Snack Bar right next to the ticket office of the salt mine. And one thing is for sure: She has the tastiest ice cream far and wide! Try it for yourself. 😊

And if you prefer something hearty, you can enjoy the beautiful weather on the sun terrace of the Bergschänke restaurant with a cold beer and Bavarian delicacies.

Salt Boiling at the Berchtesgaden Salt Mine

In July and August, salt boiling takes place in good weather every Thursday from 10 a.m. in front of the salt mine ticket office. Experienced miners show guests the process of evaporated salt production from Alpine brine to pure white gold.

Bavaria Trips from Munich to Berchtesgaden

After or before the refreshing tour through the salt mine, I recommend a walk along the Salt Experience Trail. The trail starts on the roof terrace of the mine, takes you through the "Moserrösche", past a few photo stops and quiz boards to the viewing point and back to the ticket office of the salt mine. The walk takes about 45 minutes and offers you even more information and experiences on the subject of mining and salt production in Berchtesgaden.
